5 Get travel insurance
Travel is an investment, so why wouldn’t you protect it? A travel protection
plan can cover you in case you need to cancel your trip; if your luggage or
belongings are damaged, lost, or stolen; if you must return home prematurely
due to an emergency; and most importantly, if you become ill while traveling.
(If you are a woman of a certain age, remember, in most cases Medicare will not
pay for medical treatment or supplies received overseas.) For just a few dollars
a day, a travel protection plan provides invaluable peace of mind.
6 Contact your bank and credit card companies
Save yourself the frustration and embarrassment of a denied credit card
or ATM withdrawal. Notify your bank and card company when and where you
will be traveling, so you have access to the money you need. While you’re at it,
find out about what transaction fees they will charge. (More on this in Chapter 3,
Money Matters.)
