100          Be courteous.


                             Respect local customs when photographing or videotaping
                people. Ask permission (smile and point at the camera if you don’t speak the
                language). In some countries, such as Morocco or Tanzania, your subject might
                expect a tip, so have small bills handy. Consider showing your subjects their
                pictures. If someone doesn’t want his or her picture taken, don’t take it. And
                never photograph children without their parents’ permission.
               101          Remember the rule of thirds.



                             This is the golden rule of photo composition, based on the idea
                that not everything should be centered. Look through your viewfinder and
                imagine that the space is divided by a tic-tac-toe board. Important elements
                can be aligned to appear where the lines intersect, creating more visual interest
                and energy. (See the example below.)
